Stephen A. Welles is a U.S. Marine veteran and retired project manager who spent decades working for major companies throughout the New York area. Today, he serves as the founder and project manager of the Disco Hall of Fame, a legacy website dedicated to preserving the artists, dancers, musicians, and culture of the disco era.
Born on Broadway and raised in the Bronx, Steve grew up in and around the nightclub world of the 1950s and 60s. His father managed nightclubs, and his mother was a singer in venues filled with live bands, dancers, and the pulse of New York nightlife. That early exposure shaped the rhythm of his life.
From the 1970s through 1990, Steve became a competitive club dancer, a trumpeter, and a singer who performed in urban dance bands across the city. To support his musical passions, he worked as a bartender in clubs and restaurants throughout New York, always staying close to the dance floor that defined his youth.
A respected disco historian, Steve later authored his second book, Disco Nights, which received strong media and reader reviews. Inspired by true events, the novel uses Steve’s surrogate character and the soundtrack of 70s dance music to tell a coming-of-age story about love, identity, and the nightlife of New York City during disco’s golden era.
Of all his accomplishments, Steve is most proud of being a devoted single father to two sons — now in their 30s — who remain his greatest legacy...
