Is Disco Making A Comeback?

Posted on August 17, 2022February 22, 2023 By Stephen A. Welles 1 Comment on Is Disco Making A Comeback?

This may seem like a strange question to ask in 2022, but is disco making a comeback? In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in disco music – both among fans and artists alike. So what’s behind this revival, and is it here to stay? Let’s take a closer look.

There’s no denying that disco is definitely having a moment right now. After all Dua Lipa’s, Don’t Start Now is a big hit as she’s been leading the recent Disco charge with her dance songs and disco production. Also Daft Punk with Nile Rodgers has a few nice disco oriented hits too like Get Lucky, One More Time and Give Life Back to Music which is one of my favorites. If memory serves me correct, I believe the great Giorgio Moroder was a producer on one of these songs too.

Then there’s Cerrone. He’s always doing something exciting with disco music since the 70s. His “Took Me So Long,” is a lively tune and “Good Times in Love” with Adjäna singing is also a cool, upbeat dance tune. The 70s legends CHIC featuring Nile Rodgers also had an exciting disco hit in the last few years, “I’ll Be There” (2015), which was originally written & produced by Rodgers and Bernard Edwards back in the day.

How about Lady Gaga with her (2008) hit “Disco Heaven” whose disco type songs originally led the modern day disco charge? Australia’s star Kylie Minogue released an album titled DISCO (2020) which is a hit also. As a matter of fact, if you listen closely, disco remixes are all over the internet and radio.

Gloria Gaynor’s is probably singing her heart out somewhere too. I still hear her hit tune I Will Survive on the radio which never gets old to even the young. There’s quite a few other artists, groups and DJ’s still performing which we’ll discover and cover in future posts. To me the cool part about all this is it seems the torch is being carried to a new generation of disco artists and fans.

Here’s something else I found interesting. Recently in The New York Post I read: “Eye Popping Disco Skating Rink Boogies into Central Park This Summer” (2022). Nice, what’s next Retro Disco Clubs popping up all over again for people to unwind and have a good time? I think it’s a strong possibility my friends. Personally I think it would be cool, especially after we isolated for so long due to COVID -19. We just need to get out there, boogie down, party and enjoy ourselves!

So what’s behind this resurgent interest in disco and what does this mean for the music industry? And more importantly, what does it mean for listeners? Disco has always been a genre that’s been polarizing – you either love it or you hate it. But could its resurgence see a new wave of fans coming out to get down to some groovy disco beats?

Some say it’s simply because people are longing for a more upbeat sound; others maintain that disco represents a more carefree and optimistic era. Whatever the reason, it seems clear that disco is back and here to stay for a while – so get your dance shoes on people and lets get ready to dance!
